How to Prepare for IELTS Test?



IELTS is a test used to measure four skills in the English language, that is, reading, writing, listening and speaking. IELTS test assesses one's ability to communicate, work, or study in an English-speaking countries such as Australia, UK, USA, Canada and others.  There are two general categories of IELTS test, the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests depending on the purpose of why you are taking the test. Questions will be based on either category of your choice.

Below are general points and guidelines on how to prepare for IELTS test and to ensure your success:




1) Familiarize yourself with IELTS test format. Learning centers or institute like Oman National Training Institute provide IELTS Preparation Courses. Ask your trainer for the exact test format to browse and familiarize on how the exam will be delivered.

2) IELTS Test is composed of 4 major parts that is, Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking. It is always an advantage to practice yourself in these 4 categories.

3) Understand and Practice the Listening Test. This test category is used to asses one's listening skills. It is good to be aware of the different accent of the English language as they may be variations from one place to another.  Listening test will make use of the different accents however answers are acceptable just in any accent. This part of the test usually takes up to half an hour.

4) Understand and Practice the Writing Test. This test usually takes up to an hour to finish. This part of the IELTS test is used to asses your writing skills, on how you organize ideas in answering written questions, and use of the correct grammar and spelling. Questions in this test is generally divided into 2 categories or tasks. Task 1 requires answer of 150 words and Task 2 requires an answer of 250 words.

5) Understand and Practice the Reading Test. This part of the IELTS test is designed to measure a wide range of reading skills, understanding the passage, grasping the general context of the passage read, recognizing the purpose and feeling of the writer, and understanding the whole message of the passage. There will be at least three passages to be read in this part of IELTS test. Reading test usually takes up to one hour. 

6) Understand and Practice the Speaking Test. This test simulates the real situation wherein you are going to use English language in real time. Conversation will be with the IELTS examiner, though different accents are permissible. This part of the IELTS is recorded and will usually last up to 15 minutes.
